Rising Basketball Star Zion Williamson Could Start the Next Great Sneaker Bidding War

Zion Williamson is undeniably college basketball’s biggest star and is widely considered a generational talent. So industry insiders expect brands to fight over him when he declares for the NBA Draft.
“Zion arguably is literally ‘bigger than life.’ He has a major physical presence on the court that one could say belies his athleticism and agility — and ability to defy gravity with his jump skills. And he is undoubtedly a rising star who seems to be likable,” said B. Riley FBR analyst Jeff Van Sinderen. “Those are important qualities as they relate to being a brand ambassador.”
But the brand he will choose to sign with is up in the air.
Williamson plays for Duke University, a Nike-backed school, but was spotted on Instagram live recently rocking Adidas head to toe. And after Williamson’s on-court sneaker blowout incident in February, Puma mentioned he’d fare better in the brand’s sneakers on Twitter (in a tweet the brand would eventually delete).
The NPD Group Inc.’s senior sports industry analyst Matt Powell believes every brand invested in the sport has a shot. Vansinderen thinks the list is narrower, with Adidas and Puma as frontrunners. And Ankur Amin, CEO of TGS (the parent company to retailers including Extra

Is Barefoot Footwear for You — Experts Share the Pros and Cons of Minimalist Shoes

Barefoot shoe brand Vivobarefoot has been challenging the footwear establishment with its collection of casual to performance looks that allow for more natural movement and maximum sensory feedback.
The direct-to-consumer brand, launched in 2012, offers footwear featuring a patented, ultra-thin, puncture-resistant sole that’s designed to protect the foot while running and walking.
Now, the company is taking its message to consumers with a short documentary titled, “Shoespiracy.” The film, released today, presents the opinions of a panel of medical and footwear experts including shoemakers, doctors, and bio-mechanists, about the effects of wearing minimalist footwear on the feet and body.
While these industry insiders are in favor of a barefoot approach to footwear over more traditional shoes with built-in cushioning and support, others note the trend may not be beneficial to everyone.
Barefoot & Minimalist Shoe Movement History
The barefoot or minimalist footwear movement is not new to the industry. It was introduced to consumers in the mid-2000s by brands including Vibram with its FiveFingers styles, New Balance’s Minimus styles, Merrell, and Lems.
Although the trend began to ebb, Galahad Clark, founder of Vivobarefoot, said the tides are beginning to turn with a renewed interest in this footwear category.

Would You Pay $1,000 for Gucci’s New ‘Dirty’ Sneakers? Twitter Has Plenty to Say About Them

Gucci released new distressed sneaker styles for spring ’19, and people have some strong opinions about them.
The “Screener” shoes feature classic elements from the brand: green and red stripes, and “Gucci” imprinted on the back. The kicker of these sneakers, though, is that they’re made to already look dirty, but come with a high price tag.

The brand describes the style as “treated for an allover distressed effect” and is selling four different versions, two for men and two for women.
Previously, the vintage-inspired look was mocked on social media when Gucci released the “dirty” shoes as part of its cruise ’19 collection, but now they’re available in new silhouettes and design treatments.
The women’s Screener Strawberry sneaker retails for $980, while the other version with cherries costs $1,250. For men’s, the Screener leather sneaker is $870 and the GG high-top retails for $930.
Still, the Twitterverse wasn’t impressed with the offering, creating a torrent of comment about the dirty-looking designer kicks. One user, Danny Casolin, described them as, “Fashion in all it’s glory and stupidity.”

Twitter Is Going Crazy Over Video on 12 Ways to Lace a Pair of Stan Smiths

Tying your shoes is something that most people have been able to do since they can even remember; it’s a simple task using a basic method, at least it was until this video went viral.
Twitter user Kitt Bob shared a video on Sunday of an Adidas Stan Smith sneaker being laced up in 12 different unique ways, captioning it: “I’ve been doing it wrong all my life….”
Since Sunday, the post has been retweeted almost 235,000 times with 743,000 likes. The two-minute video has already over 12 million views.

The clip demonstrates how tying your sneakers normally is a thing of the past. One method takes rainbow laces and brings them up each side separately to tie together in a big bow in the center of the shoe.
Another technique uses just one lace taken from top to bottom instead of bottom to top and then tucks the end away behind the tongue of the sneaker.
Since the Tweet’s explosion on the trending charts, other users have attempted to replicate the styles and are also responding to the complicated video with their own comedic takes.

The Great Debate: Are Cashless Stores Discriminating?

As more and more Americans demand convenience and speed in their everyday lives, it makes sense that debit and credit cards — which have boosted these features for many consumers and businesses — have become hugely important to commerce in the U.S.
But some lawmakers have suggested that retailers like Amazon that have been quick to adopt contactless payment options — requiring that customers use only mobile apps and credit or debit cards to shop their businesses — may inadvertently disenfranchise low-income families. The debate — which pits retail innovators such as Amazon against lawmakers looking to maintain access to goods and services for all members of society — has been picking up steam.
Philadelphia this month becoming the first major city to ban cashless stores and, just this week, New Jersey joined the fray when Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill banning cashless retail stores and restaurants across the entire state.
Experts believe the trend could gain momentum across the U.S. as council members in New York and elsewhere lull similar measures — expressing concerns over the future of millions of Americans who don’t have banking or mobile access.
According to FDIC’s 2017 National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Americans, 8.4 million U.S.
