New Balance’s Latest Test Run Shoe Inspired by Space Landing

The chunky sole of New Balance’s Fresh Foam More running shoe was the inspiration for the winning version of the 2019 Test Run design contest.
Test Run, which launched in 2017, is the Boston-based brand’s way to “challenge the product creation process and deliver new innovative product to consumers faster.”
In the latest iteration, Test Run PRJ 2.0, the New Balance in-house design team was challenged to take the new max cushioned Fresh Foam More and create a shoe they would want to wear.
Adara Dillabaugh, a 23-year-old Design Foundry apprentice, redesigned the upper inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first lunar moon landing.
“I was originally wearing the Fresh Foam More to run in, [but] they quickly became a part of my everyday wardrobe,” Dillabaugh said. “When I had a chance to design a lifestyle upper for this model I wanted to emphasize the retro space motif as it’s a trend I really gravitate toward.”
