Fur is out of favour but stays in fashion through stealth and wealth

As mink comes under the spotlight, many stars wouldn’t be seen dead in fur – but it remains a feature of certain luxury brands

Fur has never been less fashionable. In recent years a raft of designer labels – Gucci, Chanel, Versace, Armani, Coach and Prada, to name a few – have gone fur-free. In 2018, London fashion week banned fur from its catwalks.

Celebrities have given up fur too, from the queen of social media, Kim Kardashian West, who announced that she had “remade” all of her fur coats in fake fur in 2019, to the Queen of the UK, Elizabeth II, who renounced fur in “any new outfits” the same year.

Flares are back! 1970s staple flourishing on catwalks and high street

From Dua Lipa to Claudia Winkleman, ‘comfortable but trendy’ flared trousers and leggings are everywhere

The return of 1970s-inspired fashion will not come as a surprise to anyone who spent the summer wearing tie-dye, crochet and carrying a straw basket bag – albeit only to the local park. But flares – a 70s staple – had previously taken a backseat to fashion’s infatuation with tinted aviators, crop tops and clogs. That is, until now.

In the past week alone, the model Kaia Gerber and the singer Dua Lipa have worn flared blue jeans. Elsewhere, Nigella Lawson opted for red Safiyaa flares for her appearance in the December issue of Good Housekeeping, and Claudia Winkleman went full disco in a pair of flared sequin trousers from Zara to present Sunday’s episode of Strictly Come Dancing.

I have stumbled across a small upside to the pandemic. I can’t pretend it’s going to make any significant impact on the balance sheet, weighed against the many profound horrors, but at this point I will swoop hungrily on any crumb of good news. Wild goats roaming Llandudno! A flamingo boom in Mumbai! I’ll cheer it all to the rooftops.

My good news story doesn’t have any cute animals in it, I’m afraid. But here goes. If, like me, you are a clumsy, scruffy person who dreams of being a crisp white shirt person, and if you are in office exile on your laptop at home, I am pleased to tell you that your moment has arrived.
