Trump-Bashing and Hero-Worshipping at the National Board of Review Gala

The “year of the woman,” as Meryl Streep put it Tuesday evening onstage at the National Board of Review gala in Manhattan, rages on through the awards season circuit.
Streep joined Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Steven Spielberg, Angelina Jolie, Gal Gadot, Patty Jenkins, Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet, Daniel Kaluuya, Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Paul Thomas Anderson, Sean Baker, Willem Dafoe and more for the annual event, which — being untelevised — allows the actors a night of more candid moments. (Case in point: Robert De Niro locking lips with Streep onstage as he presented her with the best actress honor, following some expletive-laden Trump bashing.)
Perhaps Hollywood is saving their strength for the month-plus of awards season still to come; the majority of the evening’s attendees slid past reporters on the carpet, some skipping the photo stop as well. But inside, the atmosphere was casual and unguarded near the open bar. Streep mingled with Hammer and his wife, Elizabeth Chambers.
